One question I often get asked by fellow florists is how I feel about using colored or leaf-wrapped vases.
The short answer is that I don’t recommend using them, but not because of personal preference – it’s what our customers told us.
I found this out the hard way after it significantly reduced my reputation as more and more customers were complaining that our flowers were not performing well. The common denominator was that almost every complaint was with a vase that was not clear.
You see, when anyone receives flowers in a clear vase, it’s obvious when water is needed. In many cases, visitors or family and friends will notice. When the vase is colored or wrapped, there is no reminder the flowers need water - and most people never add water to them.
Let's face it, we all love color and it’s especially fun adding finishing touches by embellishing vases. Covered vases look great upon delivery, but clear vases are also beautiful and let you see the natural evolution of the stems.
That’s why I feel it's better to be safe and leave the vase clear unless the request is specifically for a holiday container with flowers. I would rather have customers enjoy a longer-lasting experience than colored and a complaint.
What do you think? Do you regularly use colored or wrapped vases? I would love to hear your thoughts.
